Unsatisfactory... March 5, 2004 20 out of 56 found this review helpful
I recently became interested in magick studies but hopes of acquiring valuable information from this book were in vain. For starters, this book is poorly written; the thoughts expressed by the author lack cohesion and credibility; I got the impression that the author isn't well versed in the study of magic. Furthermore, her discourse on natural magic was insubstantially weak. For example, old English riddles were the main tenets in regards to her essay on weather predicting; no tangible research for the reasons behind magic in weather predicting was expounded. But what was most disconcerting to me was a passage at the end of her book on magic spells(that wasn't the shocking part). What really got me is her following quoute, "I have tried to select those which seemed comparitively harmless, or at any rate not too objectionable to modern standards; so that if any reader cares to try some of them out, not too much damage is likely to result. Not having tried these old spells personally, however, I must point out that the responsibility is the reader's and that I quote them(the spells) only as curios of ancient belief." Ignorance and blatant stupidity are the thoughts that first came to mind after reading that passage. Thank you, amazon.ca, for your flexible return policy on books.
Natural Magic....a gift from a true great author June 9, 2003 Larry M. Smith (USA) 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
There isnt a bad word i can really think of about Doreen. Her books are informative and very, very useful. However, there are some things i agree and some things that i dont. But, with the book Natural Magic is from the heart of this great and very well missed author who went to Summerland not to long ago. I miss her, cause i know that there wont be another like her. I highly recommend this book on your shelf!.

I aquired this book used years ago, and I devoured it in one sitting, and find myself referring back to it often.
Anything by this author is worth reading. March 20, 2002 IvoryWitch (Knoxville, TN) 14 out of 20 found this review helpful
We lost a treasure when Doreen Valiente crossed over. But her legacy is very evident in books like this. If you can get your hands on anything by this woman, do it. No nonesense and written with a lively, witty style. A treasure.
every witch should read this February 5, 2001 marina baker (Brighton, UK) 80 out of 82 found this review helpful
My mother read this when I was a child. She was a practising witch and raised me to revere nature and to respect the craft.Thirty years later, I found this book and since the shop collapsed around me, I decided I should buy it. I stayed in the bath and read it in a morning. I realise that many of the ideas I grew up with, that influence how I now practice my craft and write about it, stem from Doreen's writing. Everyone should read this book, because it reminds us where magic comes from - not from the publishers wanting to launch another spell book on a gullible public looking for quick fixes for life's problems. No, magic is present in all of us and the world that gives us life. That's real magic. I sense towards the end Doreen was rushing a bit to meet publishing deadlines, or perhaps she'd said enough but they wanted a few more pages. But hey, who's perfect? What's important in this book is that it's written from the heart and provides valuable insight into the mind of Doreen Valiente, and it will inspire future generations to keep their magic real.
