5 out of 5 stars Escape   November 20, 2008

I loved this book. It was the perfect fun easy intriguing book to read before bed. I had trouble putting it down. I agree with other reviewers that if what you want is a bloody Vampire book this is not your book. This is more about the inner struggle between good and evil, and of course about passion and love. My other favorite books are in the Harry Potter Series and East of Eden. Somehow there is a similiar thread. People keep saying this is a YA book. I am not so sure. I think I can identify with Bella and the way she feels about Edward only because I have 35 years and numerous relationships to look back on. I'll also say I am overly educated and I don't feel this book is "beneath me"-it might just appeal more to a certain personality whatever the age and education.

I love these books! They're amazing. You have to read them all, no excuses. One of my friends made me read twilight and I'm officially addicted. You don't exactly have to buy the book because these books are everywhere, and you could just get it from the library, but if you love it like I do- you'll want your own copy to read whenever you want.

TEAM EDWARD :)

5 out of 5 stars This book is more for the romantic than the blood-thirsty!   November 20, 2008

I picked up this book because of the movie trailers. Once I started reading it, I hated to put it down. For me that is the ultimate compliment. If you are looking for a lot of fighting, blood shed and sex, DO NOT buy this book - You will be disappointed. The book even SKIPS OVER the fight scene you see on the movie trailer. (For that I was a little disappointed.)

However, it was written to make the reader feel the characters' love and pain. I must say I certainly did. I guess mostly because in high school I fell deeply in love with a blonde haired, pale-skinned boy. I truely saw fireworks on our first kiss and I felt pain in my heart when we fought or were not together for more than a day. I could relate to Bella in so many ways. I was never graceful or athletic. I was always the smart one who never had much luck with the boys, until the ONE came along. So yes, I believe it is possible to be that crazy and painfully in love with someone, even if (especially if) they are dangerous.

I must admit I feel a little silly for being addicted to this book about high school kids, since I'm a 35 yr old professional mom and all. But at the same time I can still relate to the story because my husband (who was not my high school sweetheart) is a bit dangerous. There is always something SEXY about dangerous men.

Anyway, if you enjoy a good romantic fantasy, I HIGHLY recommend this book. I am about to buy the next in the series.

3 out of 5 stars Terrible, terrible writing, but Meyer knows how to do a plot and do it well.   November 20, 2008

Stephenie Meyer, Twilight (Little, Brown, 2005)

Okay, so I finally broke down and tasted the Kool-Aid to see what all the fuss was about. And now that I've read Twilight, I'm still not sure, but it did keep me interested enough to get me to read the second book. The prologue is downright awful, exactly the kind of horrid, overdramatic pap I was expecting, but the book did manage to calm down very quickly after that. It never does, however, manage to rise above the level of conventional paranormal romance, and so I'm still confused as to what all the fuss is about.

If you're one of the seven or eight people on the planet who are still unaware of the plot, here's a quick sketch: Bella leaves Phoenix, AZ, and relocates to a small, wet town in Oregon to live with her father. There she encounters the Cullens, especially Edward, with whom she falls in love at first sight (or close enough to it not to matter). This doesn't change when she finds out the Cullens are vampires, Edward included. Surprisingly, however, she finds that Edward seems to be feeling something of the same. All goes along in the mushy bliss-changing-to-despair-and-back-to-bliss-a-score-of-times-a-day, as teen relationships are wont to do, and so Meyer throws a bad vampire into the mix who also finds himself somewhat enchanted by Bella, but with far darker designs. Cue action-thriller storyline.

Twilight is, if you'll pardon the pun, by-the-book paranormal romance that everyone around me is treating like it's the second coming of Romeo and Juliet. Even those who realize the writing is pedestrian at best (and more usually godawful) are entirely hooked. And, I have to admit, I too dove into the second book just as soon as I finished this one; if nothing else, Meyer does know how to keep the pages turning. Which is pretty impressive when your first book is already doorstop-sized and they just keep getting longer after that. Just don't expect good writing and you may find this an enjoyable trip. ***

5 out of 5 stars addicting...and excellent for its genre   November 20, 2008

ok, i'm not a young adult by any means, but i wanted to see what the hype was all about. and i am so glad i did. i thoroughly enjoyed this story. i am thoroughly addicted. it was an easy, appealing read.

If you want an escape, then get this book.

if you've had any fascination with vampires and their passionate arrogant and extremely sexy appeal, then this will feed that fascination.

If you've ever felt that you were less than ordinary and would like to be sought after and loved by the most beautiful, then you'll relate to Bella.

it was a lot of fun. very enjoyable.i think the more negative reviews came from those who lost sight of what this book is: 1)young adult fiction 2)just something to escape into and let yourself enjoy it.
